USDA Rural Development currently provides financing for 500 multi-family housing projects in rural Iowa. These facilities provide rural Iowans with access to more than 9,600 apartments. Rent in the apartments is based on income and rent assistance from the government is available depending on the income ofthe tenant.

Apartment complexes play an important role in the sustainabUity ofrural communities. They allow residents to continue to live in their home community, many times close to family and friends.

Apartments also offer numerous opportunities for social activities with friends and others in the same age group and with the same interests, as well as provide a great opportunity for young adults to build up equity so they can someday become homeowners.

"Rural communities that provide current and prospective residents with affordable and safe multi-family housing opportunities are helping ensure a solid foundation in rural America," Menner said.

During the past year USDA Rural Development helped a record number ofIowans receive funding for economic development projects and quality oflife improvements. The agency's investment in Iowa helped create or retain more than 2,200 jobs, aided 2,500 families in buying their own homes and assisted more than 250 communities in improving community facilities and upgrading local infrastructure.
